Evolution in sports: new formats for new fans

Background: The PGA will kick off a technology-infused golf league – TGL- in February 2024.  In a marked departure from traditional golf, the TGL will take place in an indoor arena.  Players will hit into a massive screen via simulators and the stadium will also have an area for chipping and putting.  About 2,000 fans will be able to attend while the players will also be mic’d up for live commentary.

Quick thoughts: The success of ventures like TopGolf has identified a market for tech savvy non-serious golf fans. The TGL is a move to leverage this to bring a new set of fans to the game. The TGL will also make live player and performance data available on screens which could be useful for wagering and other gamification options.

In many ways, the TGL is reflective of a change in social behaviours. Connection, engagement and immersion are vital for everything – including sports. This league is a move to cater to this new norm. There is a huge audience of people who watch gamers play so it makes sense that people will also view star players hit into a simulator.

While the TGL is meant to complement traditional golf and the PGA tour, format evolution is not new in sports. Cricket has seen formats shrink (from Tests to T20’s and now the Hundred) to stay in step with fan appetite for viewing durations and other commercial considerations. However, which of these formats will survive is a question for another day.

The TGL seems like an exciting format which should cater to fans in the stadium and those watching from elsewhere.
