Long before badminton or volleyball there was… Peteca

Being a badminton fan, this one really amazed me.  Imagine playing volleyball with a shuttlecock or badminton without racquets.

Peteca means “hit” in Tupian, a South American language spoken in Brazil. It originated in ancient times as a recreation and dance activity, but the modern game found its roots in the Minas Gerais state of Brazil. Rules of the game were passed down over generations.

The sport first received global attention when Brazilian athletes used Peteca as a fitness regime at the 1920 Olympics. However, it was 1973 by the time the first Peteca Federation was formed in Mina Gerais. It is now the third most popular sport in Brazil after volleyball and …. (if you are wondering what the most popular sport in Brazil is then we may need to take a step back).

The Peteca shuttlecock differs from the bird used in Badminton. Here, Turkey feathers are stuck in a rubber base.

Like badminton, the game is played with two or four people (doubles). The aim is to get the Peteca over the net with your hand and for the opposition to return before it hits the floor. One key feature is that you have 30 seconds to score a point before the server passes to the opponent(s). Generally, it consists of three sets, with the first to 12 points winning the set.

Over time the sport has found popularity in Germany and Japan. Now, it has undergone some modifications in these countries and is more prominently known as Indiaca.  The game is also finding interest in Canada thanks to some prominent Brazilian expats.  Numerous Peteca clubs have opened in the US, Spain and other European countries courtesy of migrants.

Yet, most traditionalists see it first and foremost as a fun activity, which is yet another aspect of the sport that appealed to me.  And I suppose it’s really good to develop hand-eye coordination. A 15 minute game would no doubt burn those pesky calories and to top it off, it is bound to hit your abs and chest muscles- most fun workout ever!

Technically speaking, all you need is a Peteca and an open space to enjoy the game. You may play at the beach, in the garden, the backyard or even (dare I say) in the living room. Even kids seem to pick it up quickly and it sounds like a good family outing activity.

PS: What are you waiting for? I am planning to buy a Peteca before my next beach trip.
